I had the initial section of To Be Lonely for about a month. It sort of came about from me trying to rip off a Strokes song, and I just kept playing around with it. Until one day the second half came to me when I was in the shower. So I jumped out and immediately started writing. The rest of the song came quite quickly after that.

The lyrics are about a woman at a party who everybody is mad for - I feel like everybody's had that feeling about someone at one point or another. But whilst writing the song, I thought that the idea was a bit one dimensional. This led me to wonder what that person might be thinking themselves. It hit me that, someone with all those eyes on them could feel like the loneliest person in the room, which is where the hook comes from.
