Initially Play The Game was a bit of a backburner track, I had the chords and most of the lyrics penned in before throwing it on what I like to call the 'maybe i'll use it' pile back in early 2022, where it just sat for a while. Every now and again Seb and I go through old tracks to find inspiration and so eventually we got to this track (likely titled something along the lines of 'New Acoustic Idea (RENAME) 7'). Seb exclaimed that this had to be Pool Club's first track, and the rest was history.

The song is an homage to my time spent in Brighton. The people, personalities and charm of the town are truly unique and have a warmth that is rarely seen in the south of England. The lyrics reflect how care-free everyone in the city seems to be. Evenings in the city become a vast sea of unique individuals from massively differing walks of life. Despite their differences, most people in the town live in complete harmony with one another. From gigging in local pubs and clubs (and attending a fair share of nights out myself) I have seen first-hand the interactions between many of these individuals, with the lyrics of the first verse referencing a conversation I had with a couple in the garden after one of our gigs. The husband could hardly stand and was slurring his words, and his wife was not much better herself. Despite this they were both still highly affectionate with each other and certainly were not afraid to show it!
